Expiration
Do QR codes expire?
The pattern itself never expires: a printed QR code always scans. What can stop is what the code points to.
A static QR code stores your web address in the pattern itself. Nothing sits between the scan and your page, so it never depends on a service, but the address can never be changed after printing.
A dynamic QR code stores a short link instead, such as qrdeed.com/c/k7m2p9x. The scan opens the short link, and the service redirects it to the page you chose. You can change that page at any time without reprinting, and see how many scans each code gets per day.
Subscriptions
What happens when a QR subscription ends
Because a dynamic code always passes through the provider's redirect, it only works while the provider keeps that redirect on. Dynamic codes are often sold as a monthly or yearly plan, or start as a free trial. When the plan or trial ends, the redirect is commonly paused, or sent to a page of the provider's choosing, until you pay again. The printed code still scans, but it no longer reaches your page.
With QRDeed there is no plan to end. The licence is $29, paid once, for up to 50 codes, with no renewal fee. We keep codes redirecting for as long as the service operates, and you can export every code and its target address as a CSV file at any time.
Before you print
Checks worth doing before a print run
- Scan the downloaded file with two different phones before you send it to print.
- Print at least 2 cm (about 0.8 in) wide for close-up scanning, larger for posters read from a distance.
- Keep the white border (quiet zone) around the code; QRDeed files already include it.
- Use error correction M for most print; choose Q or H if the code may get scuffed or folded.
